Brightly colored fruits and veggies are loaded with antioxidants – compounds that block dangerous free radicals. By eating a diverse range of these “powerhouse” foods, even in small amounts you can boost your health benefits. A study done at Colorado State University suggests that consuming a wide array of fruits and veggies is far more beneficial than sticking to your usual go-to fruits and veggies. Here is a sample of some antioxidant-rich foods to try……

Grapefruit – A 2010 study from the Hebrew University and Massachusetts General Hospital found that naringenin, a flavonoid can aid the liver in breaking down fatty acids the way some diabetes drugs do.

Cranberries – Studies suggest that the antioxidants in cranberries may help protect you from infections, reduce the risk of plaque buildup in the arteries, and help prevent the growth of some cancers.

Garlic – Allicin, a compound found in garlic has been shown to lower blood pressure, as well as prevent certain cancers. Studies have also found that garlic can reduce lipids and “bad” LDL cholesterol levels in the bloodstream.

Coffee – A recent study of 400,000 people found that drinking coffee daily was linked to less risk of dying from heart disease, diabetes, or infections. While coffee is loaded with polyphenols, an antioxidant, it’s also filled with caffeine, which can trigger a migraine for some people……  Prevention   February 2013
