Bread and rolls, followed by cold cuts and cured meats reportedly contribute to more daily sodium intake than any other food category in the U.S. according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. While pizza, poultry, soups, sandwiches, cheese, pasta dishes, meat dishes and salty snacks made the list of top ten sodium rich foods, bread and rolls ranked number one.

Increased salt consumption may be a risk factor for developing high blood pressure.  Too much sodium in the diet can also contribute to cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, osteoporosis, and stomach cancer.

The CDC noted that if the reduction of sodium content was reduced by 25 percent in the top ten food categories, the average daily sodium intake in the U.S. could drop by 11 percent….. Integrative Medicine Newsletter  February, 2012
