A recent study from Rush University Medical Center in Chicago was published in the July issue of Neurology. It found that greater cognitive activity in childhood, as well as middle age can make for a better brain in older age.
Dr. Oz and Dr. Roizen have a few suggestions for actively keeping your brain humming along…..

* Learn to use your other hand (Your right hand if your left handed). Try brushing your teeth with your other hand, or maybe use your mouse with it. Alternating your hands can drive your brain to make positive changes.

* Don’t rely on crossword puzzles and Sodoku. Heavy crossword players show the same rate of cognitive decline as people who do few.

* Walk on bumpy surfaces. Choosing to walk on uneven surfaces like cobblestones can improve the vestibular system of the inner ear which plays a central role in balance and equilibrium.

*  Memorize a song. Habits of careful listening will help your ability to understand and remember.

*  Exercise your peripheral vision. A recent study says drivers stay on the road longer and have fewer accidents after actively training their peripheral field of vision.   Huffington Post Health  8/22/13
