Oral Transmucosal Fentanyl Citrate Used to
Treat Acute, Disabling Migraine Pain:
A Case Series in Outpatients

Objectives: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of oral transmucosal fentanyl citrate (OTFC, ACTIQ) as an outpatient treatment for acute, refractory migraine pain.

Conclusions: OTFC was effective as an outpatient treatment for acute, refractory migraine pain, and ED visits were notably decreased. OTFC was well tolerated in these patients who had a history of tolerating parenteral opioids in the ED when experiencing refractory migraine pain and most of whom were not on daily outpatient opioid therapy. OTFC may be an effective outpatient treatment for acute, refractory migraine headache pain, and, potentially, could reduce ED visits. Additional studies of OTFC in the outpatient treatment of migraine pain are warranted.
