Valproate

American Headache Society

June 19-22, 2003; Chicago, Illinois

Objectives: To determine whether further investigation of the use of sodium valproate as a treatment for chronic daily headache in children and adolescents is warranted based on a retrospective review of its use in our institution.

Conclusions: IV sodium valproate may provide acute headache relief in pediatric patients with chronic headache with good tolerability. Subsequent treatment with divalproex may provide continued improvement in headache frequency. This strategy may avoid polypharmacy and resultant disability. Further study is needed. This information was presented in part at the Annual Meeting of the Child Neurology Society, October 2002.
