Don't Let Yesterday Take Up Too Much Of Today-16Headache: The Journal of Head and Face Pain recently published a study looking at the effect of Botox on depression in chronic migraine. The study was conducted by K. Maasumi, MD, N. Thompson, MS, J. Kriegler, MD and S. Tepper, MD. The study retrospectively evaluated patient reported outcomes collected before and after at least 2 sessions of Botox injection for chronic migraine. Depression was assessed by the Patient Health Questionnaire -9.

Chronic migraineurs were identified. In addition to the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ9), the European Quality of Life, The Pain Disability Index and the Headache Impact Test were also used.

Four hundred and twenty-nine patients were part of the study, and data was gathered from 2010 to 2014. The average age was 45 years, with 85.5% female, and 92.1% Caucasian.

The study found that Botox injections in chronic migraine patients statistically improved depression scores in patients beginning with at least moderate depression and improved scores in headache and quality of life. The Botox injections also decreased impact of headache on daily life.
